Homemade Cafe was simply the best! They are now closed down. The service was great and the ambiance was always pleasant, as I've frequented this establishment since I was a kid-- literally for over 30 years. Now they're gone. So sad. Hopefully they pop up again somewhere else. Wishing them luck. The pic attached is one of the good ol' faithful meals: ranch rancheros.

I was so sad to read in Nosh that Homemade Cafe has closed! Nina and I went there a while ago, although I didn't write an update, and Alan and I were probably there once it reopened for indoor dining, although I can't remember. It was a wonderful place for lunch/brunch and I will miss it. I wanted to have their chicken and waffles, but when Nina and I were there I got seduced by something else, as often happens, and we didn't return, so now I can't. It's been a Berkeley institution for so long I never thought it would close.

I want to commend this place for serving food to people who couldn't afford a meal, in their restaurant. Served with dignity. Nothing but five stars from here. In gratitude for your many years of work and generosity.

They permanently close in half an hour today, New Year's Day. :-( So many warm memories of delicious breakfasts and good people. "Good" includes giving free breakfasts to those who can't afford them, because "it's the right thing to do." Carl the griddle chef made flipping eggs and pancakes look like an art form.
